Four questions to ask of every competitor rate

A competitor rate on a screen looks simple: one hotel, one date, one number. Before it changes your price, it should answer four questions.

1. When was it captured?

Hotels change rates through the day. A rate captured this morning can be gone by tonight. Check the capture time first, and compare rates captured close together. A gap between two hotels means more when both prices come from the same rate shop.

2. Where did it come from?

The same room can carry different prices on the hotel’s own website and on each booking channel. Note the channel behind each rate before you compare it with yours. When your direct rate sits above your rate on a booking channel, check for a potential parity gap.

3. What does it cover?

Compare like with like: the same arrival date, length of stay, number of guests and rate type. A two-night rate for two guests says little about a one-night rate for one guest. When a competitor shows no rate, find out why. A sold-out hotel tells you something different from a hotel with no published rate for that date.

4. What changed?

One price is a snapshot. The useful signal is movement: which competitors moved, by how much and on which dates. Local events and falling availability are clues to investigate before you follow a move.
